Tara Benwell says, “In our first ESL-Library meeting of the year, Ben noticed that I was referring to our 2012 Lesson Plan Calendaras the “two thousand and twelve” calendar instead of the “twenty-twelve” one. The pronunciation of our new year isn’t something I thought about until yesterday, though I’ve since learned that many people have questioned it, including the 2012 Olympic committee.

Ben reminded me that we never say things like the War of one thousand, eight-hundred and twelve. We wouldn’t say that my grandma was born in one thousand, nine-hundred and twelve. Tara Benwell says, “One exercise I do with my students is a worksheet called “Spanglish.” Another English teacher passed a version on to me about a year ago, and I’ve added to it as I’ve gained teaching experience. It’s very straightforward, and my students usually love it. It’s just a list of about 70 sentences featuring common mistakes Spanish speakers make in English as a result of translating directly from Spanish.
